Veterans' Cortege Escorts Riverhead Hero
Riverhead — The body of Pvt. George D. Owens, who was killed in France on June 14, 1944 was brought to Riverhead yesterday morning for reburial. Church bells tolled and the fire department siren was blown for about 20 minutes while the body was being taken from the train at 11:20 AM yesterday.
The casket was met at the station by about 75 members of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, plus a firing squad and delegations of Boy, Sea and Air Scouts, who formed a cortege behind the hearse which rolled slowly to the Penney Funeral Home.
