Veterans' Cortege Escorts Riverhead Hero

Riverhead — The body of Pvt. George D. Owens, who was killed in France on June 14, 1944 was brought to Riverhead yesterday morning for reburial. Church bells tolled and the fire department siren was blown for about 20 minutes while the body was being taken from the train at 11:20 AM yesterday.

The casket was met at the station by about 75 members of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, plus a firing squad and delegations of Boy, Sea and Air Scouts, who formed a cortege behind the hearse which rolled slowly to the Penney Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held in the First Congregational Church at 2:30 PM Sunday, with the Rev. John F Heidenreich, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverhead Cemetery.

Owens, who was 22 years old when he was killed, was a native of Johnson City, Tenn., and trained with the 113th Infantry Regiment in Riverhead prior to leaving the country. He married a Riverhead woman, the former Virginia Peterson, daughter of Fire Commissioner Carl F. Peterson.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, George Jr. of Riverhead, and a brother and five sisters, all of Tennessee. Owens' body was one of the 2,300 which arrived from France on May 6 aboard the SS Lawrence Victory.
