After his honorable discharge, his love for community and civil service led him to work for the Urban League and share his extensive civil expertise with the Community Action Program (CAP) until his retirement in 1994.
As a community activist, Eugene remained faithful to building a better community having served in a variety of leadership capacities with organizations throughout Hackensack. He was a devoted member of the Majestic Lodge #153 since 1977, and served in numerous roles both at the local and state level.
Eugene is survived by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife Hortense E. Marshall (Burwell) to whom he was married for more than six decades; proud father of Eugene Marshall Jr., Rev. Gwynne E. Burt, M. Div., and Robert. R. Marshall; father-in-love to Phyllis Marshall and Dr. Tanji P. Reed Marshall; proud grandfather of Jason Dean Marshall, Jacqueline Amanda Marshall, Eugene Marshall III, Aerin Reed Marshall Barnes (husband, Darren Barnes), Robert R. Marshall, II; and great grandfather to Joseph Kai Barnes. He is survived by siblings Ann Smith, Adele (Gert) Henderson (husband, Dennis), sister-in-love, Ella Jackson (husband, Edward Jackson, Sr., deceased), and Carlos Jones (wife, Lucy).
Eugene spent a lifetime of sowing seeds into the lives of others. He will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
The celebration of life viewing for Eugene Marshall, Sr. will be held on Friday, January 8th. Friends and family will be able to pay their respects, at the Earl I. Jones Funeral Home, from 3pm-9pm; 305 First Street, Hackensack, NJ. As per CDC guidelines, only walk-thru viewing will be allowed.
Celebration of Life services will be held on Saturday, January 9th at Calvary Baptist Church in Garfield, NJ. Due to CDC guidelines, this will be a closed service.
