Info on her spouse:
Samuel Heston High was born 30 Mar 1859 in Lancaster, PA to David and Elizabeth Burkholder Wanner High. A note from Beverly Whyler’s genealogy research quoted Samuel Heston High’s son, Samuel Amos High, as saying, “Do not know the name of Samuel Heston’s father but his mother was ‘a Burkholter.’” I suspect he may have meant ‘Burkholder’ and believe Elizabeth Burkholder Wanner (1827-1916), daughter of Peter Wanner (1797-1860) and Catharina Eby Burkholder Wanner (1795-1865), to be Samuel Heston’s mother. Samuel Amos may not have known his grandfather’s name because he passed on early in Samuel Heston’s life.

"Elizabeth (Burkholder Wanner) the 6th, of Catherine's children, was married to David High, and then they moved to a farm located on what is now route 5, near Cedar Lane, Pa. They bought the farm from his father on the instalment system, which was what a deed or title was not given until the last payment for the property was paid. In this incident, after they had paid a considerable part of the instalment, her husband, David High, died, and as there was no deed for the farm granted to them, therefore Elizabeth was deprised of her dower right in the farm.
After leaving the farm she moved to a small home near Reidenback, and later married to Michael W. Martin, of near Leacock, where she moved and lived until the death of Mr. Martin, when she bought a home at Akron, Pa., where she lived until she became too feeble, because of her age to live alone, then she had her home with different family(e)s. H(e)r last home was with Mrs. Mary Weaver, a cousin's child, where she died and was then buried aside her first husband, David High, in the Weaverland graveyard." (The Catherine Burkholder Family pamphlet, 11 Oct 1936)

Samuel Heston’s father, David High (1822-1860), was a farmer who is believed to have passed in Feb 1860 from typhoid fever shortly after Samuel’s birth. Typhoid fever was quickly increasing in epidemic proportions in North America at the time and along with diphtheria took out quite a few other High relatives. Samuel and older brothers John W. (1850-1923) and David P. (1855-1942) listed in the 1860 Census are presumed to have been raised by their widowed mother until she remarried. Samuel’s aunt, his mother’s sister, Mary Wanner, was also living with them in the 1860 Census and must have been a big help with the three boys. Samuel’s mother would marry the widower Michael Weaver Martin (1823-1878) in PA sometime between 1865 and 1870. I have no record of Samuel in the 1870 Census, so I’m not sure if he stayed with his newly remarried mother or not. I believe his brother John was living with the Isaac Wenger family and other brother David was living with the George Weaver family, both in West Earl, Lancaster, PA, in 1870. (I think it was fairly common back then to place children from a deceased spouse in other families when one remarried.) Mary Wanner was living with the Groff family. Samuel High would have been about 10 years old at this time. I’ll have to check all the 1870 West Earl, PA Census records for any Samuel about 10 years old. I would assume he went to live with another family probably in West Earl, just as his brothers did –perhaps erroneously incorporating another family’s surname. There is a Samuel Martin (not High) listed with the Michael Weaver Martin family in 1870, but I believe this is Samuel Oberholtzer Martin born in 1857 to Michael Weaver Martin and his first wife Esther Oberholtzer.

Elizabeth Burkholder Wanner High’s tombstone in Weaverland Mennonite Cemetery in East Earl, PA says “wife of Michael Martin and widow of David High.” According to Family Search Records from the Mennonite Historical Society in Lancaster, PA (Eli W. Martin Fam. Hist.1691-1971),” Michael Weaver Martin was married twice, first to Esther Oberholtzer, and second to Elizabeth Wanner High. He and Esther had 8 children.” So, this is most likely the Michael Martin I am looking for.

Samuel Heston High married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bollinger Bucher in PA between 1879 and early 1880 (daughter Minnie was born in Sep 1880). Lizzie would have been two years younger, probably just turning 18 years old. They were a family of the Mennonite faith. Together they had twelve children, two of whom died in infancy. Three children were born to them in PA: oldest daughter Minnie (1880-1960), an infant (Elmer-name from Beverly’s research I cannot find info on), and daughter Anna (1883-1925). Minnie and Anna both took their mother’s maiden name, Bucher, as their middle name, which I have found seems to be common practice in the Mennonite faith. Samuel’s widowed mother, Elizabeth Martin, is listed as living with Samuel and Lizzie in the 1880 Census (proof his mother‘s first name was Elizabeth and that she remarried a Martin who was likely deceased before 1880).

About 1885, Samuel and Lizzie moved to Bone Creek, Butler, NE outside the Mennonite community and the family changed to the Brethren Church faith (from Beverly’s research). Nine more children (Ada May (1885-1968), Jonas (1887-?), Lizzie (1889-1963), Margaret (1891-1968), Morris David (1892-1970), Samuel Amos (1894-1987), another infant (from Beverly; I have no info on), Irene Naomi (1897-1971), and Paul Silas (1900-1987)) were born in NE. They were a large, close-knit family. The 1900 Census from NE lists Samuel Heston High’s occupation as a farmer and older daughters Minnie and Anna’s occupations as servants. The other children were either at school or at home because they were too young for school.

Sometime between 1900 and 1907, the family moved to Colorado. In 1907 and 1909, they are listed in Grand Junction, CO City Directories. In the 1910 Census, the family was living in Fruita, Mesa, CO. Samuel and Lizzie were interested in giving their children the best education possible, and when Samuel became ill, son Samuel Amos left school to support two sisters who were attending college (Beverly’s research).

Lizzie High died 13 Jul 1934 in Fruita, Mesa, CO. She is buried with her husband at Elmwood Cemetery, CO. Samuel Heston High died a few months later on 24 Nov 1934 also in Fruita, Mesa, CO.
