Betty Joyce (Kirby) Copeland, 73, of McAlester, died Thursday, January 7, 2021 in McAlester at a local nursing center.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. A private burial will be at Bache-Red Oak Cemetery.

Betty was born on December 12, 1947 to Shelton Lois “Shorty” and Rosie Faye (Webb) Kirby in McAlester. She attended Haileyville High School.

Betty graduated from Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in counseling from East Central University in Ada. She worked several jobs, and managed Daylight Donut Shop in Mangum for several years.

Betty enjoyed sewing, dogs, and she was an avid bible reader. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father: Shelton Lois “Shorty” Kirby and a brother-in-law: Ron Roberts.

Betty is survived by her mother: Rosie Fay (Webb) Kirby-Smith of Mangum; daughter: Sandra Kennedy of McAlester; grandchildren: Destiny Williams and husband, Tommie of McAlester, Joshua Edwards and wife, Tiffany of Corpus Christie, Texas, Jordan Edwards and wife, Caitlyn of Kansas City, Kansas; seven great-grandchildren including: Raven, Destry, Kai, Emery, and Enoch; sisters: Louise Kahrs and husband, Greg of Muskogee, Dana Thompson and husband, Rocky of Mangum, Wanda Roberts of Mangum, and Sharon Kirby of McAlester; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
