THE SAGA OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS published by THE GENEALOGY SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN ILLINOS; Carterville, IL
Louise O... writes, "The Thebes Court House picture on The Saga was great! But--Henry C. Barkhausen wasn't the architect--Henry C. was the doctor and son of Heinrich Arnholdt Barchhausen, the architect. You aren't the first and I'm sure not the last who will have a problem with his name. According to the German records, he was Heinrich Arnold, born 24 March 1782, in Salzuflen, Westfalen, Prussia. He died 15 September 1851, in Thebes, Alexander Co, Illinois. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1835 and apparently came into Baltimore, He was in Union Co., Illinois, when contracted to build the Thebes Courthouse, so he moved to Thebes, I think in 1845.He had a home down close to the river and supplied steamboats with wood. He sent to St. Louis for Henry Weiman, who come from the same area in Germany and he knew him to be a good stone mason. Henry A Barchhausen was considered a "master joiner" in 1810 in Germany.

"He and his wife, Henrietta Charlotte Margareth Schnatmeyer are both buried in the old Thebes Cemetery." His stone was so worn I had a bronze plague put on it a couple of years ago. There were six children, all born in Germany, but I only know about four.

"#1 Frederick August fell from the roof of the court house while he was working on it and apparently was hurt quite badly. He moved to Pulaski County, near Wetaug, where he farmed and changed his name from Barkhausen to Barkhouser."

"#2 Heinrich Arnold Jr. I know nothing about."

"#3 Henry C. was the doctor and married Catherine Hunsaker. They had two daughters, Susan Adeline who married Henry Planert and Louisa Catherine who married John A. McLernend Gibbs, M.D.. Adeline and Henry had Frank Planert. Frank had Bill Planert and Bill had me."

"#4 Karl Eduard I know nothing about."
"#5 Christian Henrich Arnold married Elizabeth Miller and died young at Thebes"
"#6 Johanna Margreta married an Ahrens and remained in Baltimore"
