After a long and valiant struggle with dementia, Edwina (Eddy) Krol Smith, age 77, passed away on November 1, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was a resident in the Skilled Nursing Memory Unit of Normandy Farms Estates Retirement Community in Blue Bell, PA where she received wonderful, loving care for which the family is very grateful.
The oldest of four children, she was born in Chicago on December 18, 1942, the daughter of Dr. Edward J. and Anne (Shirvin) Krol. Eddy graduated from Loyola University in Chicago where she earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mathematics. She was Miss Loyola of 1963.
Eddy was a Professor of Mathematics at Montgomery County Community College for 32 years. She was respected by her colleagues and loved by her students. She tutored many nieces and nephews as they coped with math courses during high school and college. A woman of many talents, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting blankets for Project Linus, and seasonal decorating of the house. After retirement, she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, first in construction then in the Norristown ReStore. During her empty nest years, she indulged her passion for travel and visited such places as China, Africa, Iceland, and took European river cruises.
Eddy's greatest joy was her family. She especially delighted in her grandchildren. She was a fun and active "Mom-Mom," always taking the grandchildren on educational and recreational trips, outings to local attractions, trick or treating in costume with them and doing fun crafts. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Eddy was also a compassionate, sensitive, and dear friend to many.
She is survived by her husband of almost 53 years, Dr. Louis J Smith; daughter, Kelly Yetter and husband Scott; daughter Andrea Galambos; 5 grandchildren – Rachael Donnelly, Sarah and Brett Galambos, and Olivia and Luke Yetter; a great-granddaughter, Aurora Anne Horan; and sister Cynthia Owen and brother Gerald Krol, both living in the Chicago area.
In view of pandemic restrictions, services and burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery were private. A memorial Mass will be scheduled when pandemic conditions have been mitigated. Services provided by Joseph J. McGoldrick Funeral Home, Jenkintown, PA.
