Wm. L. Johnson, Pioneer Kansan and Veteran Dies.

Yesterday - Body to Bluff City
Short Funeral Services Held here for Burial.

Wm. L. Johnson, a pioneer Kansan and Civil War veteran, died at his home yesterday, 221 First avenue at 5 o'clock of heart trouble. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the First Methodist church with Dr. Frank Neff in charge, and the body was taken to Bluff City, Kansas last night by relatives, where burial services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock with interment in the cemetery of that city.

William Lafayette Johnson was born near Liberty, Union county, Indiana, on April 1, 1847. When four years old his parents moved to Boone county, Indiana, and settled in the heavy timber, his mother dying when he was seven years old. His father Jordan O. Johnson, was a minister in the old Christian church, and died while Mr. Johnson was fourteen years old, thus limiting his chances of an education.

Being an orphan he enlisted in the army with an older brother when the Civil War broke out, but was rejected due to his age. He later got in as a private in Co. K, 72nd Indiana Infantry Volunteers and served for three years. He later returned to the home of his brother and July 29, 1869 married Susan E. Beck, at Lebanon, Indiana, the young couple later moving in a covered wagon to Saline county, Missouri.

In March 1879 the family moved from Missouri to Sumner county and pre-empted a claim, living there for over 22 years and enduring the many hardships of early settlers of Kansas. From the homestead they moved to Bluff City, Kans., in 1900 after living there nine years came to Hutchinson to be with their youngest daughter, Mrs. Nellie Koelling. He was a staunch church member, held a number of positions of trust and was a member of the G.A.R. for years.

Mr. Johnson is survived by a sister, Mrs. Eliza Taggart of Chattanooga, Tenn., and two brothers, James M. Johnson, Lees Summit, Mo., and Bucher Johnson, of Dublin, Ind. He is also survived by the following children; Carl O. Johnson, cashier of the Farmers National Bank of Ponca City, Okla.; Mrs. D.T. Smith, of Prossen, Wash., Mrs. Wm. L. Lewis, Bluff City, Kans., William E. Johnson, Ponca City, Okla., Volney O. Johnson, Aulne, Kans., and Mrs. Nellie Koelling, of 119 First Avenue West.
