Gary graduated from Handley High School in the Handley area of Fort Worth, Texas in 1959. He was the valedictorian of his graduating class. He then graduated from Arlington State College in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in English. Upon graduating he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He was stationed for a time in Alaska.
