Aristomenes (Manny) Scarpelos, 80, of Huguenot, a retired U.S. customs inspector.Born in Manhattan, Mr. Scarpelos settled in Huguenot in 1965. Mr. Scarpelos worked for 49 years with the United States Department of Treasury, working as a customs inspector until his retirement in 1994. Mr. Scarpelos was a member of AHEPA (American, Hellenic, Educational and Progressive Association), serving as a former president of the Michael Constant chapter of the group. Mr. Scarpelos was a member of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Bulls Head, where he formerly served as a board member and vice president. He served in the United States Navy for a time and was stationed in San Diego. Mr. Scarpelos enjoyed traveling internationally, especially to Greece. He also was an avid newspaper reader. Along with his wife, Aliki, also surviving are his son, Paul; two daughters, Theodora Leondis and Angela Papaterpou; a brother, Harry Scarpelos; a sister, Katherine Lombardo, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a service at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
