He was born on June 8, 1933, in Catron, MO, and resided most of his life in Anderson except for the winter years spent in Mesa, AZ.
Don graduated from Anderson High School where he had perfect attendance his senior year except for the one day he applied for a job at Delco-Remy. He also attended Ball State Teachers College.
Don attended Velda Rose Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ and Park Place Church of God in Anderson.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Philippine Sea. Don returned to work at Delco-Remy as an electrician.
Don is survived by his wife, whom he married, October 22, 1958, Linda (Helvering) Barnes; children, Torey (Robert) German and Douglas (Lisa) Barnes; 3 granddaughters, Hannah (Jake) Peery, Jenna German, and Brianna Barnes; sister, Lena Dehority; sister-in-law, Carol Barnes; and nephew and niece, Jay Dehority and Pam Barnes.
He was a friendly and kind person with a subtle sense of humor. Don was a gifted artist with computers, cameras, and wood carving tools. Don could fix almost anything.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Ethel (Sandlin) Barnes; two brothers, Loyd and Dwayne; and niece, Kristy.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Rawlins House, including the Indiana National Guard, for their care and compassion during Don's stay.
Cremation was chosen and there will be a celebration of life held at a later date.
