Vernon W. Downing of Elmira, age 82, passed away Sat. Jan 2, 2021 following a short illness. This wonderful man born on March 31, 1938 in Moretown, VT. Vernon was the son of the late, Bernard & Bertha Downing. He was a wonderful husband to Carol Parow Downing where they were in a wonderful marriage for 61 years. and an amazing father to 3 children, LoriAnne (Howard) Crouthamel, Dale Downing Sr, and the late, Penny White. He also served his country as a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a stern and hard-working man who retired from Millbrook Bakery. He was more than anything, a family man, who would do anything to help no matter what was going on. He was caring and loving, this is what brought him the most amount of joy throughout his life. He along with all of this was an avid sports lover, enjoying watching professional sports like Baseball, NASCAR, and Golf. He had wonderful siblings, Ted Downing, Sandy (Chuck) Firenze, Donna (Howard) Murphy, Bernard "Snook" Downing; along with his late siblings Lloyd Downing, Floyd Downing, and Ardelle Downing, and a sister-in-law, Charay; also 7 amazing grandchildren, and 13 adorable great grandchildren; lots of nieces, nephews, family friends, along with his furry companion, Bubba.
