He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he attended Woodward High School and the University of Cincinnati. After graduation he taught English and dramatics at Cincinnati Walnut Hills High School for many years. He then moved to Los Angeles to be near his daughter Evelyn Venable (Mrs. Hal Mohr), former stage and screen actress. Together they edited the papers of his father, William Henry Venable, the famous Ohio poet, historian, and educator. He and two of his brothers served in the Spanish-American War.
