Janice Powell Mack, 72, of Salem, VA departed this life on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. She was born November 25, 1948, to the late Eddie and Maxine Hairston Powell.

She graduated from William Fleming High School and received her associate degree from National Business School.

Janice is survived by her sons, Micheal Ward and Byron Mack; granddaughter: Aaliyah Mack; sisters, Jane Powell and June Powell; uncle, Bernard Hairston, Sr.; other relatives and friends.

My mother had mental issues, but I know that she loved me. Every time I created new music, she was the first to know. Our relationship was unique and complicated, but I loved her. On this day, I will remember her as a single mother that never put a search for a man in front of my upbringing. I always will cherish the memories of being a child, playing numerous board games with her while watching her chomp on her huge cup of ice cubes. I'll remember the days when we would go rent movies from the video rental store and rented so many that we couldn't finish watching by the time they were due back. I'll never forget the nights that she would let all my friends hang out at our home and made them feel at home, even though she made De-Von walk home after he kept adjusting the thermostat without her permission. Unfortunately, as she got older, her mental and physical health deteriorated. Although that may be my most recent memory, I still have some very cool childhood memories that are priceless. She left me with her persistence which is invaluable. Because of being a troubled soul, she wasn't always able to maximize that ability for the greater good, but she taught me to and that will be her legacy.

A Celebration of Life will be held privately. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.
