Mary Alice Shelor Newcome
Born April 22nd, 1936, in Sumter, S.C. she died October 20th, 2000 at 2 a.m. in Skylyn Place, Spartanburg. Her parents were Henry and Jessie Shelor, both deceased, and her sisters are Gwynn Duffee of Florence, S.C. and Betsy Kent, of Columbia. Alice graduated from Sumter High School in 1954, and from Duke University in 1958 with a degree in Nursing. While attending Duke she met Jim Newcome, from Gary, Indiana. They were married for 22 years, and raised three children, James, who lives in Fiji, Joel who lives in Dayton, Ohio, and Catherine, who lives in New York. Living in Charleston, S.C. from 1960 to 1969, Alice was a nurse at the Medical College and very active in First Scots Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir. In Spartanburg from 1969 on she was a nurse at Spartanburg General then ran an office for Clinical Drug Investigators of New York, and was a nurse at Mary Black Hospital. She went to First Presbyterian Church and later to Trinity Unity Methodist Church, and then to Westminster Presbyterian Church. Alice was a active member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment and a kind caregiver to many a dog or cat.
