Hazel Inez Cooper Ross of Lindon, Utah passed away peacefully on December 25, 2020 on her 93rd birthday. She was surrounded by many family and friends who loved her.
Hazel was born on December 25, 1927 to Burts Lee and Henrietta (King) Cooper in Laurens, South Carolina and was the youngest of four children. She was educated at Swansea High School in South Carolina. She served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in West Palm Beach Florida. After returning from her mission, she married Carl Herbert Ross on June 7, 1947. They were married for 71 years. Carl preceded her in death on March 7, 2019. Carl and Hazel had three children, 22 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren.
Hazel was a full-time wife and mother and disciple of Jesus Christ. She raised her children teaching them how to love and serve those around her. Hazel served in many callings in her church, including the President of the Relief Society (stake and ward multiple times), MIA and Primary. She was an Early Morning Seminary Teacher, Gospel Doctrine Teacher and held just about every calling in her church.
Along with her church service Hazel worked in part-time jobs where she could be home with her children when they were home. She also was an accomplished seamstress and in her younger years sewed for people to earn extra cash. She taught quilting for Adult Education in Columbia, South Carolina for many years. In 1982 she designed, coordinated, and orchestrated quilting the world’s largest quilt that was displayed in various malls, the state capital building and found a home in the SC State Museum. While her quilt was later exceeded in size, none could ever compare to the intricacy and beauty of that quilt.
Hazel loved traveling and met many lifelong friends through her travels. She also loved the Utah Festival Opera and was a valiant and enthusiastic supporter every year for 24 seasons. She traveled from South Carolina to Utah every year to attend the opera from 1995 up until 2008 when she and Carl moved from SC to Utah. Music was of supreme importance to her. Hazel was a card writer and loved to send cards, notes and letters. She loved to find humor in things and she loved to laugh. She was admired and loved by so many and will be greatly missed
Hazel is survived by her children Carl Thomas (Renee), Robert Wayne (Valerie), Elizabeth aka Libbie Hamann (Tom). She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, two brothers (Luther Benjamin Cooper and Burts Lee Cooper Jr) and a grandson Douglas Ross.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the Battlecreek Seventh Ward Chapel, with a viewing from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. prior to the services. Due to current Covid 19 concerns. The services will be streamed viz Zoom by the ward. The link will be provided above. Interment will be in the Veterans Memorial Park Cemetery, Camp Williams.
