She was born in Ardmore, Tennessee on November 14, 1923, one of eight children born to the late Jesse A. and Alma G. (Vickers) Mitchell. Growing up as part of a large family in the south during the Great Depression, Mary was instilled with the value of hard work from an early age.
In the early 1950’s Mary and her family relocated to Saint Louis, MO where she began working as a Personal Lines Underwriter for Fireman’s Fund Insurance. She later went on to work as a Secretary at the Lafayette Square Senior Housing and ended her working career at Sears, where she worked as a sales associate at their Jamestown Mall location.
In 1994, she moved to Jerseyville and became a member of the Dow Southern Baptist Church, where she was a loyal and faithful member, participating in many church activities as well as serving as a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Mary enjoyed making crafts and playing board games, with Scrabble and Bingo being amongst her favorites. She had an outgoing personality and never knew a stranger and enjoyed socializing with her friends and neighbors. Her family meant the world to her, and she relished in the time she was able to spend with each and every one of them – most especially her host of grandchildren, who truly were the apple of her eye.
