Richard D. Ashenbremer, 91, of Bloomington, passed away at 5:42 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at his home with family by his side.
His services will be private. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Carl S Martin American Post 635 in Normal, IL to support their efforts in providing military funeral rites for veterans.
He was born February 24, 1929 in St. Louis, MO, son of George R. and Mabel E Stoldt Ashenbremer. He married Rita Reeves on July 9, 1949 in Bloomington, she preceded him in death in 2010. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Eileen Barnard. and brother, George Ashenbremer, Jr.
Surviving are eight children, Audrey Kline and Diane (Karl) Zenger, both of Normal, David (Helen) of Downs, Michael (Sharon) of Holder, Steven (Patti), Kenneth (Stephanie), Keith and Marty (Stacey), all of Bloomington. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roger (Carol) Ashenbremer of Makanda, IL.
Richard enlisted at 17 and was a United States WWII Navy veteran having served in the Philippines from 1946 to 1948. He also served with the United States Navy Reserves from 1953 to 1958. He had finished his high school course work while in the Navy and received his diploma from Chenoa High School. He was very proud of his service to his country and the World War II Victory Medal he was issued.
He enjoyed a 34 year career as an electrician working throughout Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana and was a 68 year IBEW Local #197 member, with his first 12 years being transferred in from Railroad Local #685. He worked at the Clinton Power Plant, State Farm Corporate, and also on the ISU dormitories. Encouraged by job superintendents and foremen in his trade, he completed requirements for an Illinois State Teacher Certification in 1971 which was valid for provisional vocational/electrical wireman training and enabled him to share his hard-earned knowledge with others.
Richard grew up fishing and hunting to help provide food for his family. He was an assistant basketball coach for his sons' basketball teams at St Patrick's Grade School. He enjoyed watching the hummingbirds come and go each season and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. His love of fishing was inherited from his father and was then shared by several sons and a few grandchildren, some of whom spent countless hours with him on his pontoon at Dawson Lake. Richard loved time with his family. At the end of a visit, he would say "Love you all. The long, the short, and the tall."
His family would like to thank Dr. Spaniol, Dr Agarwal, OSF Home Health, OSF Hospice, and all who helped along the way.
