It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of my beloved husband, my wonderful father, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, Wayne Cartwright. As one of four children born to Lester and Agnes Cartwright, Wayne was raised in Portland, Oregon. Together with his brothers and sister, he enjoyed a wonderful childhood and had many fond memories, which stayed with him as long as he could remember. After High School, he wanted to explore and experience other parts of the world and decided to join the military service. During 26 years of active duty, foreign duty assignments stationed him in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. In Germany, he met the love of his life, Ingrid. They married after a short engagement and continued to be stationed in Germany for seven years. Wayne was welcomed into her family as if he was their own son. She was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother to their son, Thomas, and together, they weathered the highs and lows of life. Eventually, in 1976, they returned to the United States, where Wayne served his final assignment at Fort Bliss. Throughout his military career, he served his country honorably and with integrity. After retirement, he and his wife decided to make El Paso their home. They had grown fond of this city, with its mild climate, the slower pace of life, and the diversity and friendliness of its people. For a few years, he worked for the German Air Force at Fort Bliss, until after his retirement in 2005. Finally he and his wife had some time to travel the country, which they thoroughly enjoyed. During his spare time, he loved to volunteer for the County Sheriff Department and the El Paso Police Department. Unfortunately, as time progressed, dark clouds rose over the horizon, and Wayne was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. For about ten years, he and his wife faced this devastating and cruel illness with courage, determination, patience and lots of love. But in the end, his heart was tired and the sun set over a wonderful life, a decent and gentle man. We miss him so terribly, he will always be in our hearts, we will never forget him. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Ingrid, son Thomas, brothers Lester (wife Cecilia) and Glenn (wife Live), sister Diane, brother-in-law Dieter, nieces Rhonda and Robin and great-nephews George and Zachary and great-niece Lauren. The family would like to express their gratitude to all of Wayne's doctors, nurses and caregivers for their expertise, dedication and kindness; in particular Dr. Ronald Baker, Dr. David Turbay, Dr. Saurabh Pande, Dr. Oscar Munoz, Dr. Boris Kaim and Dr. Ahmed Farooq, including nurse Zeinia who was available any hour of the day and night. We would like to express special warm thoughts of thankfulness to Wayne's caregiver, Grace Saenz, who was tireless in taking care of him, making him comfortable and tending to his every need. To our close friends, Gaby and Dennis, Ulla, Iris and Monika who all have supported us with their prayers, words of encouragement and deeds of kindness. Thank you all, we love you and are eternally grateful. To the Hospice Team of Monte Cristo Home Healthcare, a heartfelt thank-you. May God bless you all and keep you safe always. Services will be at Martin Funeral Home East on Monday, January 04, 2021, starting at 12 o'clock noon. Immediately after the service, interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. The family is kindly asking expressions of sympathy be made by donating to the Alzheimer's organization. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 10 people will be allowed at any one time at the Funeral Home and at the gravesite. Attendees are required to wear a face mask.
