Wilma J. Cross

Wilma June Cross, 83, of Ohio Valley Health Care in Parkersburg died June 27, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born at Little Bull Run, Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Laco Marion VanHorn and the late Ruth Arlie (Skinner)VanHorn.

Wilma came to Parkersburg and went to work in the Navy Department at O'Ames building and inspecting bombs to be used in World War II. She worked at the American Viscose in stripping and wrapping department until her marriage. She was a member of the Red Hill United Methodist Church, a former chairperson for the American Heart Association, a Girl Scout troop leader and a member of the Wood County Farm Bureau.

Mrs. Cross spent her time helping others. She was proud to be a member of the CCMH Auxiliary and the Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are four daughters, Marsha D. Gates and her husband, Lyle, of Parkersburg, Nancy E. Bush of Vienna, Martha L. Archer and her husband, Dale, of Mineral Wells and Cynthia J. Butcher and her husband, Harvey, of Parkersburg; a brother, Dale VanHorn of Chatham, Va.; sister, Frankie Burton of Belpre; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer and Amanda Gates, David and Timothy Bush, Melissa Archer and Elizabeth Hicks and Tony, Robbie, Michael, Bill, Kimberlee and Adam Butcher; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of almost 53 years, Ralph Gasten Cross in 2000.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, the Reverends Randy Mitchell and Paul Drake officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. today until service time Thursday.

The family would like to express their deepest thanks to the caregivers at Wood County Senior Citizens Center, staff and caregivers at Cedar Grove Personal Care Facility, caregivers at Ohio Valley Health Care, Doctors Michael Beane, Ramijo Jacobs and Krzysztof Sobieraj, 1st East and 1st West at CCMH, and Reverends Sue Jones, Randy Mitchell and Paul Drake.
