Sanford—Mrs. Laura Holoman Murphy, 88, of Sanford, formerly of Tomahawk, died peacefully Thursday, December 31, 2020.

Burial will be held in the Clinton Cemetery following a Graveside Service led by Rev. Tim Register of Siloam Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 9, 2021. She will be buried beside her loving husband of 54 years, the late Charles Henry Murphy.

Born September 30, 1932 in Raleigh, Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of the late Dallas and Bessie Gray Holoman. She was raised in Raleigh, a graduate of Broughton High School and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (BSBA ‘54).

On October 22, 1955, she and Charles Murphy married at First Baptist Church in Raleigh. They lived and farmed in Tomahawk on the Murphy land that has been in the Murphy family since 1774. They were members of Siloam Baptist Church in Harrells where she taught Sunday School for many years. Laura taught at Harrells Christian Academy and later at Sampson Community College.

After retirement, Laura moved to Sanford, NC in 2010 and became a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Pierian Literary Society, a member of the Private John Grady Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the UNC Chapel Hill Alumni Association.

Laura is survived by three daughters, Ginny Herring and husband Burke of Danville, Va., Bunny Paderick and husband Rick of Sanford, and Patricia Horrell and husband Greg of Tomahawk; and one sister, Carolyn Smith and husband Mark of Sumter, SC; seven grandchildren, Robert Herring and wife Jennifer, Laura Beth Trammell and husband Bobo, Carolyn Herring, Dr. Tripp Paderick and wife Mallory, Murphy Paderick and wife Jordan, Jason Horrell and husband Jeremy Crisp, and Arran Squibb and husband Cody; twelve great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Kalyn, Evelyn, Peyton, Brantley, Sawyer, Addie, Mary Charles, Parker, Grayson, Colton, and Dallas; and many nieces and nephews.
