BELGRADE -- Paul A. Bickford, 65, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at the Maine General Medical Center in Waterville with his family at his side, following a year long battle with mesothelioma.

He was born in Belgrade on Feb. 17, 1942, the son of Everett and Lillian (Guptill) Bickford.

He was a graduate of Belgrade High School, Class of 1960. During high school, Paul worked at Farnham's Market. For a short time he worked at the Maine State Transportation Department.

Paul served a four-year apprenticeship at Bath Iron Works where he worked 35 years, retiring in 1995 as Assistant Foreman in the pipe shop department. He had a long-time passion for old cars, his favorite being his 1942 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe. His 1956 Ford Country Sedan was in the movie, Empire Falls.

He enjoyed the spring and fall antique car meets in Carlisle and Hershey, Pa., and the Thursday night old car meets at Ainslie's in Gardiner. He was a member of the Maine Obsolete Auto League and the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

For 44 years, Paul enjoyed living by Belgrade Stream and built the house in which he and his family lived.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping and gardening. He enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and got a lot of enjoyment from the family pet, Bridget.

He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and enjoyed his special times with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Jane Bickford, who he married in Augusta on Aug. 3, 1963. His children Lisa Chapman and husband, Richard, of Fairfield, Tina Easler and husband, Alan, of Belgrade, and Chad Bickford and wife, Tracey, of Sidney. Two brothers; David Bickford and wife, Pricilla, of Casco, and Verne Bickford and wife, Laurie, of Vienna. His sister Jean Perkins and husband, Don, of Ocean Springs, Miss.

His grandchildren Robbie and Christopher Fortier, Dawson and Brian Chapman, Tyler and Taylor Easler, Kaleb and Brandon Bickford. He also leaves several nieces, nephews and many special friends.

A spring graveside service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.
