Donald Lee Cottrell

Donald “Donnie” Cottrell of Warner Robins, Ga., left his earthly life for his heavenly home on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020. A celebration of Donald’s life service was held Tuesday, Jan. 5 in the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins, Ga., with the Rev. Jeff Cleghorn officiating. Following the service, Donald was laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery. He was 81 years old.

Donald was born in Pike County to Robert and Anna Mae Stringer Cottrell on May 17, 1939. He was raised on the family farm in the Dover area. He was a member of the Dover Baptist Church. Donald attended Clarksville and Clopton schools, graduating from Clopton High School.

Donald was drafted into the United States Army in 1962. He made the military his career and retired from the United States Army after 20 plus years. He was a Vietnam War veteran, having served two tours of duty there. Donald was stationed in many different places, but called Warner Robins his home base. It was there that he met and married Sue Nell McDonald. They had three children, James, Brenda, and Susan.

Donald loved country and blue grass music. He and Sue Nell were regulars at the Powerville Opry. he was passionate about hunting, fishing, and tending his garden. Because of his talent in gardening, he was featured in a newspaper article for growing a 45 pound watermelon. After retiring, Donald became passionate about buying and selling antiques and collectibles, which was also a passion of his father. Donald had a natural ability for trading and selling and soon became a well-known trader and seller in the flea markets and shops in the Warner Robins region.

Donald is survived by his son, James Cottrell and wife, Angela of Kathleen, Ga.; a daughter, Susan Green of Winter Haven, Fla.; granddaughters, Lauren and Selena; grandson, Layne; great-grandchildren, Rorie and Genna; three brothers, Glen Cottrell and wife, Sue of Louisiana, John Cottrell and wife, Marcie, Clarksville, Nathan Cottrell and wife, Lee Amy of Marshfield; a sister, Delores Burgmeyer; and special friend, Richard Dowell of Bowling Green; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Donald was preceded in death by h is parents, Robert and Anna Mae Cottrell; his wife, Sue Nell Cottrell; a daughter, Brenda Smith; and two brothers, Russell Cottrell and Richard Cottrell.
