Joseph Harrell Curlee passed away October 8, 2007 at the age of 87. He was born in the Argenta community, near Mathis, on November 4, 1919. His parents were Frank Barnwell Curlee and Dora Williams Curlee.

He was an active member, until his health impeded his participation, of the Borden Street Church of Christ in Sinton. Harrell began public school in Mathis and attended there until 1935 when the family moved to Sinton to open The Curlee Chevorlet Company. Harrell was a charter member of the Sinton Chapter of the National Honor Society, graduated from Sinton High School in 1937 and graduated with a BBA degree from the University of Texas in 1941. After Pearl Harbor, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy and was sent to the Navy Supply Corp in the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University, near Boston. His next assignment was a Disbursing Officer at NAS. Beauford, South Carolina. He later served as Supply and Commissary Officer on Guam, holding that post until the war in the Pacific came to an end. He was discharged from the Navy in December, 1945. He later attended the General Motors School of Modern Merchandising and Management in Detroit then returned to Sinton and joined the Curlee Chevorlet Company. In 1953 he opened Harrell Curlee Chevorlet in Taft and sold that business in 1964. He continued to operate the Curlee Chevorlet Co. in Sinton and retired from the automobile business in December, 1984 but continued to manage several property interests in San Patricio, Bee and Jim Wells Counties, until his death. In the early '50s, Harrell became active as an adult volunteer with the Boy Scouts. Over the years, he served as Cub master for a Sinton Cub Scout Pack. He was active in local Boy Scouts when his sons were involved with local troops. Harrell held several positions within the Gulf Coast council of the Boy Scouts, including Council President. He was awarded the Silver Beaver award for his service to the local council. He also held several committee chairs at the regional level of the Boy Scouts. For his regional service, he was awarded the Silver Antelope award. He retired from active, adult scouting in 2001. Harrell was a member of the Sinton Kiwanis Club from March, 1946 until his death. He also was active in the Taft Kiwanis club from the early '50s through the mid 60's. While working with Kiwanis at the State level, he served as a Lt. Governor for the Corpus Christi area in 1958. Harrell was awarded the George Hixon Kiwanis Fellowship in 2003 as part of the Sinton Club's 75th aniversary. In the late '60s, Harrell served one term on the Sinton City Council including a one year term as mayor. During this time the current city government structure was implemented and urban renewal was passed. He served on the original San Patricio County Drainage District board in the early '70s. He served on the Education Service Center, Region II board for 16 years, and served terms on the Board of the First State Bank of Odem and was an organizing director of the Portland State Bank.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Dora Curlee and his brothers: William Keith (a twin) and Curtis L. Curlee, Sr. and a great grandson Christian Bryan Curlee.

Joseph Harrell Curlee is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lola Tidwell. He has three children, John (Jane) and Chris (Brenda) both of Sinton, Texas and Dawn Curlee Carlson and her husband John Kraft, of Terre Haute, Indiana. Harrell has six grandchildren, John David (Katherine) of Grand Prairie, Julie Curlee Richey (Kenneth) of Lubbock, Texas, Christopher Keith (Angela) of Ft. Hood, Texas, Kenneth (Emily) of Temple and Kerry Curlee Van Cleave (Fred) of Mineola and Alexander Carlson of Terre Haute. There are six great grandchildren; Jayna and Jillian Curlee of Grand Prairie, Hunter Wayne of Ft. Hood, and Sidney Grace , RyLeigh Faith, and Zachary Van Cleave of Mineola.

Visitation and funeral services were held Oct. 9 & 10 at the Ritchea Gonzales Funeral Home. Burial followed in Sinton Cemetery in Sinton, Texas.
