George Hewes Ross, Jr. passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020 of complications from COVID-19. George, the son of George and Elisabeth “Libby” Adams Ross was born in 1930 in Buffalo, NY.

His father, a DuPont engineer, moved his family to Old Hickory, TN when he was six weeks old. There his sister Elisabeth and brother Charles were born. The family moved to another DuPont location in Richmond, VA where George spent the majority of his childhood years, with time in Pittsburgh, KS during World War II while his father served on Active Duty establishing Army Ammunition Plants throughout the Great Plains region.

George returned to Richmond and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He continued his higher education as a member of the Virginia Tech ROTC Corps of Cadets, earning his Industrial Engineering degree in 1953.

In the Fall of 1953 George married Ann Hart of Beverly Hills, CA and started their life together during his active-duty Army posting at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. George completed his active duty commitment in 1956 and then transitioned to the US Army Reserves’ Selective Service Branch. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1990 at the rank of Colonel.

In 1956, George started his lifelong career with DuPont in Wilmington, DE before moving to New Johnsonville, TN in 1958 to help start the new DuPont Plant, working there until his retirement in 1992. George and Ann raised their five children Vicki Bechet (Frank), Terri Twyford (Jim), Stephanie Maasen (Barry), George (Marti) and Pat in New Johnsonville.

A charter member of the New Johnsonville Lions Club, and also a member of the Waverly Lions Club, he held every officer’s position, (some more than once). As a Lion, he coordinated the annual service project that tested pre-school children’s eyesight before they started first grade. He was an active Boy Scout Leader who greatly supported the young men of Boy Scout Troop 579, sponsored by the New Johnsonville Lions Club. In 2018 he was awarded Boy Scouts of America Lifetime Achievement Award.

George was elected and re-elected to the Humphreys’ County Board of Education, proudly serving for 20 years. He was active in the Waverly First United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men. He was also a member of the Waverly American Legion Post 34, and Tennessee “T’s” Antique Car Club. As part of the Club he could always be seen driving his beloved 1930 Ford Model A Roadster in the annual Veteran’s Day Parade.

In 1989 he married June Patterson, adding her three children, Rick, Russ and Lauren (Robert Rains) to his family. He was a loving and devoted husband to June. Together they are proud grandparents to a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandchildren on the Ross side are Geoff Loose, Beth Loose; James Twyford, Ross Twyford; David Maasen, Katie Maasen Keeton, Leslie Maasen Langford; Nancy Ross Tomchik, Loring Ross; Adam Ross, Courtney Ross. Grandchildren on the Patterson side are Stratton Patterson, Stokes Patterson; Bryar Smith, Jace Smith, Griffin Patterson; Alexa Rains, Corbin Rains, Evan Rains.

George was preceded in death by his daughter Terri.

George will always be remembered by his unconditional love for his family, his strong work ethic, his penchant for volunteer community service, and the funny stories he would tell his children, grandchildren, and friends.

He was deeply loved, respected, and admired by family, friends, and all who knew him, serving as an incredible role model who truly had a life well lived. Throughout his adult life he exemplified the Virginia Tech motto, Ut Prosim, latin for That I May Serve.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Waverly Richlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you celebrate George’s life by showing acts of kindness to people in need within the community or make a donation to a local community service organization.
