Nancy Baldwin (Irwin) Barton Butler
December 13, 1940 – December 30, 2020

Nancy Baldwin Irwin Butler, 80, of Stuart, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Her gentle and gracious demeanor, love for her family, her pets and her gardens, combined with her fierce determination to overcome any obstacles will be truly missed by those she leaves behind.

Nancy was born on December 13, 1940, in New Haven, Connecticut, as the first of the four children born to David Baldwin Irwin and Alice Richmond Peters Irwin. Her parents raised their family in West Hartford, Connecticut, where they founded the Hartford Element Company, which was relocated to Newport, New Hampshire in 1968. Nancy attended the Oxford School for Girls and Hall High School in West Hartford, where she excelled in music and academics and graduated early.

Following her marriage to William (Bill) Barton, Nancy graduated from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. Her first two daughters, Luann and Carolyn, were born in Hartford. Business transfers led the Barton family to Nashville, Tennessee; Barrington, Rhode Island; and then to Worthington, Ohio, where her third daughter, Jennifer, was born.

In 1974, the family purchased a vacation home in Mariner Cay in Stuart, Florida, to escape the cold Ohio winters, and they eventually moved to Sewall's Point as full-time residents and local business owners in 1977.

In 1985, Nancy married Joel Butler, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy UDT-EOD, at the Jensen Beach Community Church. She returned to her love for nursing and cared for many of the infants and children in the Martin County community during her years serving as a nurse at Lullaby Nursery and Pre-School and then at Hibiscus House where she compassionately cared for abused children. She paused her career to help care for her young grandchildren, with whom she shared her joy for nature and reading animal stories.

She also greatly enjoyed attending their school, musical and sporting events over the years. Following her retirement from nursing, she became the office manager for Jakab Property Management in Jensen Beach.

Nancy was devoted to her family and was known for her passion for gardening, including at night using headlamps and spotlights; her love for all of the family pets; her knowledge of family history and preserving their stories; her beautifully handwritten notes and cards; and for the peace and joy she found from listening to music. Throughout her adult life, Nancy most enjoyed the time her extended family spent together at the Irwin home on Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire, boating, fishing, water-skiing, walking along the lake, and preparing and sharing meals and swapping family stories. While in Florida, Nancy looked forward to quiet days spent fishing on the beach and spending time in Key West with her husband, Joel.

Nancy was predeceased by her son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Timmann; her first husband, William Barton; sister Jewel McKeon; sister-in-law, Sharon Barton; and her parents David and Alice Irwin.

Nancy leaves behind her cherished family, including husband, Joel Butler; her three daughters, Luann Barton Justak (John) and Carolyn Barton Timmann of Sewall's Point; and Jennifer Constance Leasor (Jason) of Mississippi; her step-son, Joe Butler (Jen) of Arkansas; her granddaughters Alexis Hope Justak Ekstrom (Tyler), Charlotte Grace Justak and Shannon Baldwin Timmann; grandson Morgan Alexander Timmann; and step-grandchildren Hannah, Micah and Clara Butler. She is also survived by her brothers David Peters Irwin (Virginia) of Newport, New Hampshire; and Charles Richard Irwin (Ann-Marie) of Austin, Texas; her sister, Dorothy Irwin Clode (Jeffrey) of Spokane, Washington; her brothers-in-law Jonathan M. Butler (Marianne) of Riverside, California, and David S. Butler of Idaho Falls, Idaho; sister-in-law Rebecca C. Richardson of Cleveland, Tennessee; and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services at All Saints Episcopal Church Cemetery, Jensen Beach, Florida, will be private, with a Celebration of her life to be planned at a later date. Services are under the direction of Aycock Funeral Home - Young & Prill Chapel.

For any who wish to honor Nancy's memory, donations to any charitable cause on behalf of children, pets, gardening, nature, or nursing would be a special tribute to her personal and lifelong commitment to those causes.
