Dr. Stephen E. Reid, Jr., 73, of Olney, died on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at his home, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

Dr. Reid was born on April 27, 1947 in Evanston, IL, the son of Dr. Stephen Emmett Reid, Sr. and Grace Bishop.

He married Karen Nelson on July 19, 1997 in Arlington Heights, IL, and she survives.

He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1976. He completed his General Surgery Residence from 1976-1982 at University of Illinois at Chicago. He continued his education receiving a fellowship in Surgical Oncology. at Roswell Park Memorial Institute Buffalo, NY from 1982-1984.

Stephen was a dedicated doctor for 44 years and considered every patient and co-worker a family member. Stephen loved sharing his knowledge and was recognized many times, including receiving the Teacher of the Year award for Residents from Northwestern Memorial Healthcare in 1997, the Rural Physicians of Excellence Award in 2013, and the Preceptor of the Year for SIU's Physician Assistant program in 2012 and 2018. He published numerous research papers in medical journals and was committed to providing the highest level of compassionate care to his patients, many of whom became his close personal friends. He was very competitive, loved playing games, including golf, bridge, mah jong, "the journal club" and Exploding Kittens. He was an avid sports fan, especially for the Chicago Cubs & Bears and enjoyed playing fantasy sports with friends & family.

Stephen was a loving husband, father and papa to all those he leaves behind, which includes his wife, Karen of Olney; son, Stephen and his wife Emily Reid of Sharon, MA; son, Daniel Reid of Chicago, IL; sister, Patricia Weber of Des Plaines, IL; sister, Liddy and her husband Ron Bartelstein of Deerfield IL; sister-in-law, Debbie Reid of Deerfield, IL; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Anita and Robert Lombardi of Northport, FL; grandchildren, Charlie, Lizzy, and Sam; his favorite four-legged friend, Jenny, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Stephen and Grace Reid; brother, Michael Reid; brother-in-law, Paul Weber. Cremation Rites were accorded.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, so that friends and family can gather to remember Stephen.

In lieu of flowers, Stephen had requested that memorial donations in his honor be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Carle Center for Philanthropy (Richland County Hospice), the Humane Society of Olney, or Shelter Friends.
