She was born February 22, 1931 in York County, VA and was the daughter of the late Oliver and Maude Topping.
Hazel loved playing Bingo, Yahtzee and the slots at Dover.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge #966; and worked in the nursery at Emmanuel Episcopal Church for 28 years. She also helped and volunteered in many organizations including the Boys and Girls Village for 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar C. Thompson, Sr.; a daughter, Shirley M. Bender; a sister, Doris Evans; two brothers, Virgil and Floyd Forrest; and a son in-law, Preston Harrell.
Survivors include her two daughters, Anna Harrell and Anita Hurst and her husband Gary; a son, Oscar “Tommy” Thompson, Jr. and his wife Debbie; eight grandchildren, David, Doris Marie, Tommy, Angela, Jolene, Lisa, Lori, and Gary, Jr.; and nineteen great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Nansemond Pointe Nursing & Rehab in Suffolk for all their care and support.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, January 4, 2021 in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk.
