Edward Lewis Sr. (1721-1792) was the 10th of 15 children of Samuel Lewis (1673-1739) and his wife Susanna (Jones) Lewis (1675-1740). His parents originated from Lynn, Massachusetts and settled in New Jersey before 1701. Edward and his siblings were all born in New Jersey.

Edward married Sarah Morris (1728-1808) in Morris County, New Jersey on May 30, 1745 in Roxbury Township. The marriage produced 9 children. Three of their eldest sons James Lewis (1747-1818), Joseph Lewis (1748-1814) and Edward Lewis Jr. (1750-1817) all served as ranking officers in the American Revolution as did son-in-law Henry Southard who became a United States Congressman from New Jersey. Son-in-law Henry Southard and his wife Sarah (Lewis) Southard are also buried in this same cemetery. Their son, Edward's grandson, Samuel Lewis Southard would become a United States Senator and Governor of New Jersey and Secretary of the Navy under President James Monroe.
