William Howard Mathis Sr., age 80, of McDonough, GA passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. William was born April 22, 1940 in Berlin, GA to the late William Leland and Vera Mathis. Mr. Mathis served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserve from 1958 until 1964. Always a "car guy", he would work at several service stations as well as Palmer Tire before landing a job at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, GA where he would retire from the Hobby Shop doing auto repairs and maintenance. It was during his time in the Army Reserve that Howard, as his family called him, married Peggy Sowers and they would spend the next 59 years together raising a family of their own. Members of McDonough First Assembly of God may not recognize the name Howard as most of his friends called him Bill. Mr. Mathis is survived by his loving wife Peggy, his son Scott Craven Bridge of Albany, GA , son William Howard Mathis Jr and his wife Alicia of Ocala, FL and daughter Jennifer Mathis Rigsby and her husband Ryan of Jackson, GA. along with grandchildren Christy Bridge (Marc) Hall, Jeremy (Jennifer) Bridge, Amanda Bridge Mitchell, Lauren Mathis Rakel, Warren Tyler Mathis, Wyatt Taylor Mathis, William Chance Mathis, Leland Jake Mathis, Hannah Rigsby (Robert) Jeffcoat and Walker Allen Rigsby. Howard was also blessed with 9 great grandchildren; Abigail Hall, Olivia Hall, Emma Hall, Noah Bridge, Adysan Ricketson, Aiden Mitchell, Marshall Mitchell, Henry Rakel and Judah James Jeffcoat. The Mathis family will receive friends from 2pm to 4pm on Tuesday December 29 at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, GA. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday December 30 at Floral Memory Garden in Albany, GA.
