Hollopeter, Sarah
"Funeral services for Mrs Sarah Hollopeter were held Wednesday at 10 AM from the Community church under the direction of Danekas & Duncan Funeral Home. Rev E R Madson was officiating clergyman. Mrs George Norin and Mrs C C McCormick sang ‘In the Garden' and ‘Sometime We'll Understand'. These were family request numbers. Pallbearers were Buriage Armstrong and Glen Biggart, who served in this capacity at Mr Hollopeter's last rites in March, 1931; E L Makey, James McKinnon Sr, Ralph Danekas and Eli Duncan. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery beside her husband. Born Oct 29, 1861 at Bradford Junction, Ohio, Sarah Brown was reared in Ohio and married there 69 years ago to Joe Hollopeter. The family moved to Iowa where they resided about 8 years, and then moved to Carrington, North Dakota for 3 years. In 1901 they came to Harrington which became ‘home' for all time to the parents and their family. Mrs Hollopeter joined the Eastern Star order here but later transferred her membership to Spokane chapter. She joined the Rebekah lodge here, and was proud of her 50-year membership to Spokane chapter. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters lodge during its existence here; she was a member of the former Presbyterian church here, and its Ladies Aid. In all of these organizations, Mrs Hollopeter was a faithful worker. In 1917 Mr & Mrs Hollopeter moved to Spokane where Mr Hollopeter died in 1931. In 1939 Mrs Hollopeter went to live at the Masonic Home at Zenith. During her time there she became known as ‘grandma' to the old people. Mrs Hollopeter, in company with her children, Mr & Mrs D Lee Hollopeter of Portland and Mr & Mrs Joe Bartlett of Walla Walla, visited Harrington just a year ago. She was alive and active for her 88 years and told of her various interests at the home; she made quilts, crocheted, made her own house dresses, etc. At 86 years, she was thrilled with her first air plane trip—Portland to Los Angeles. Although she had been on the hospital floor at the home, a month, she was able to be in a wheel chair, and was mentally active up to her death. Her condition became worse Thursday of last week and death was the result of senility. Surviving Mrs Hollopeter are her children: Ira W Hollopeter, Seattle; Roy A Hollopeter, Gresham, OR; Dan (Lee) Hollopeter, Portland; Alta Pilant, Boulder City, Nevada; Maude Bartlett, Walla Walla; 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Relatives who were here for the last rites were Mr and Mrs I W Hollopeter, Seattle; Mr and Mrs Joe Bartlett, Walla Walla; Mr and Mrs D L Hollopeter, Portland; Mr and Mrs R M Pilant, Boulder City; Mr and Mrs Wesley Pilant and son of Spokane, and Mrs Bartlett's sons, Robert L Pilant of Riverside, CA, and John Pilant, Boulder City."
