Joel is predeceased by his parents Omar M. Ray, Lillian Ray, and Beulah Ray, his stepmom. He is survived by is wife of 33 years, Gail Baker Ray; son, Britton Ray of Dublin, Ga; son, Derek Ray and his wife Cynthia of Acworth; daughter Prentiss Schorsch and her husband Patrick of Texas; son, Clay Stewart and his wife Carmen of Cartersville; daughter, Beth McArdle and her husband Scott of Cartersville; twelve grandchildren; brother, Gary Ray and his wife Charlene of Dalton.
Joel graduated from Dalton High School in the class of 1953 and then attended the University of Chattanooga. He served in the US Army in 1957. He retired from Marta in 2015 after working for twenty years.
He was a longtime member of Roswell Street Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir. Joel’s choir family was very special to him.
Joel loved his family. He has twelve precious grandchildren that he loved to give his total attention and they felt his love and support. Pops was a hero to them.
He was extremely proud of his adult children and tried to keep up and touch base with them.
