Activist Alan Canfora, wounded in May 4, 1970, Kent State shootings, dies at 71.

Alan Canfora, one of nine wounded student survivors of the May 4, 1970, shootings at Kent State University, has died.

Canfora's sister, Chic Canfora, made the announcement on her Facebook page Sunday.

"It is with immense sadness that I share news of the passing of my beloved brother, Alan Canfora — a devastating loss to our family, friends and the Kent State/May 4 community," she wrote.

Born Aug. 21, 1949, Canfora was 71.

His sister later said her brother died Dec. 20 at his home in Munroe Falls following a brief illness unrelated to COVID-19. Due to coronavirus concerns, only a handful of family members were present.

She said the family chose to delay announcing his death so they would have time to break the news to their mother, who is 95.

"We wanted her to know that he did not suffer," she said. "She knew he was ill, but he passed suddenly."

She said arrangements for services are pending.

Kent State University President Todd Diacon said Canfora’s legacy will never fade at Kent State, just as Canfora never allowed those killed and injured on May 4, 1970, to be forgotten.

“As the president of Kent State University, I join with many others as we mourn the death of Alan Canfora, an individual so linked to our institution," Diacon said. "Alan was tireless and fearless in his search for the truth of what really happened on May 4, 1970. He made a difference, and he will be missed."

As a 21-year-old junior at Kent State University, Canfora was one of hundreds of anti-war students who protested May 1 through 4 in downtown Kent and on campus. On May 4, he was 176 feet away from guardsmen when they fired on unarmed student demonstrators. He was shot through the right wrist within the first 13 seconds of firing.

Four students — Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Lee Scheuer and William Schroeder — were killed by guardsmen's bullets.

Canfora, a member of Students for a Democratic Society, grew up the son of a union activist in Barberton. No stranger to demonstrating, he protested the Vietnam War twice in Washington, D.C., in 1969 and was part of the militant SDS group that confronted campus police at Kent State’s administration building with anti-war demands that year. Canfora cited the death of a classmate, Bill Caldwell, in Vietnam in April 1970 as a particular reason behind his anger with the war.
