She was the 6th of nine children of Jacob and Mary Leonhardt (ex Leonhard).

She was one of the "Sacred Twenty" in 1908, the first 20 nurses in the United States Navy Nurse Corps, and became their very first Chief Nurse. She served the U.S. Navy for 20 years at the navel hospital in Portmouth, VA, Guam, and aboard the hospital ship USS Mercy..

She never married.
