She was born on May 31, 1913 in New London, daughter of the late John D. and Blanche Wilcox Murfit. Mildred was educated in the Knoxboro Public School.
On February 27, 1932 she married Donald Fremont Gilbert in Oneida Castle, a blessed union of sixty-five years until his passing on May 11, 1997. She and her husband owned and operated their own dairy farm in Burlington Flats until 1974 when they retired and moved to Ft. McCoy, FL.
Mrs. Gilbert's life was centered on being a mother, caring for her family and her home.
Surviving are five sons and their wives; Leonard and Lois Gilbert of Mohawk, Franklin and Gwenn Gilbert of Ft. McCoy, FL, Donald and Colette Gilbert of Middleville, William and Connie Gilbert of Frankfort, Thomas and Diane Gilbert of West Exeter, five daughters; Virginia and her husband, Richard Hardman of Grand Blanc, Joyce Shafer of Brick, NJ, Margaret and her husband, Ronald Buell of Coconut Creek, Bonnie and her husband, Howard Bowen , Gayle Irene Gilbert all of Burlington Flats, one sister, Dorothy,Kohl of Rome, a brother-in-law, Edward Gilbert of Pearl City, Hawaii; thirty-one grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren, one great great grandson, many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Donald, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Gilbert, two brothers; Merritt and Earl Murfit, three sisters; Bess Hull, Florence Moot, Edna Hilts, a grandson; Brian Gilbert, two great granddaughters, Katie Hardman, Rebecca Gilbert and a son-in-law, Durward K. Shafer who died in 1996.
Interment will follow in Exeter Center Cemetery.
