Information written by his sister, Muriel Hurn Barnett: Charles E. Hurn graduated from Lauderdale County High School on May 5, 1943. At the age of 18, Charles entered the U.S. Army Air Force (May 13, 1943). This was 17 months after America entered World War II. He recieved training in California and Texas before orders came to report to Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi. (At the time, emergency rescue was something new for the Army Air Force...having previously been done by the Navy.) Men in the Emergency Rescue School were specifically trained for over water search and rescue missions. Charles became a member of the fourth Emergency Rescue Squadron which was activated for overseas duty on April 22, 1944. This squadron consisted of 59 officers and 205 enlisted men. All of these soldiers were selected from the 2121 Base Unit pool. The Fourth Emergency Rescue Squadron had a ground echelon and a flight echelon. This squadron was authorized 25 airplanes...including 11 B-17G aircraft. Charles, a sargeant, was a crew member of a B-17 known as a Flying Fortress. He was a B-17 waist gunner. When his plane was shot down off the coast of Japan, all the crew members were found but not all were identified. Therefore, it was agreed for all to be buried together in the National Military Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a Sargeant in the 4th AAFand a gunner on a B-17.
