Barbara was born December 19, 1930 in Rock Island, Illinois to Floyd and Jessie Mae Bierman and was a lifetime resident. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1948 where she was the head Majorette for the marching band. Barbara began her work life as a private secretary for Greenview Memorial Gardens and then the Rock Island Arsenal. Later she worked as a playground supervisor for Jordan Catholic School.
Barbara married William G. Lawrence on June 16, 1951 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. Upon the arrival of children, she became a homemaker which she thoroughly enjoyed. Barbara was devoted to her children. She attended all their music, sports, scouting and school activities. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and room mother. She helped organize the band boosters at Alleman High School. Her devotion continued with her grandchildren as she loved playing games, especially table tennis.
Barbara was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the special choir and the Plus 50 club. She loved to bowl and belonged to the St. Pius Bowling League, the Rock Island Ladies League and the Quad-City Classics. She won the singles championship in the Rock Island City Tournament in 1951. Barbara helped establish the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary 658 and served as their first president. She was a member of St. Ambrose University President’s Club, Daughters of Isabella, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Circle 532, and the Moline American Legion Auxiliary Post 246. She loved playing cards and was a member of the K.C. Auxiliary Card Club, which she helped organize, the St. Mary’s card club, and Alleman’s 500 card club.
In retirement, Barbara also enjoyed traveling the world with her husband. She enjoyed working in the yard with her flowers and was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children (and spouses), Bill (Angela) Lawrence, Des Moines, IA; Marilyn (Richard) Warnke, Omaha, NE; Tom (Julie) Lawrence, Bettendorf, IA; Bob (Tamalyn) Lawrence, Farmers Branch, TX; Kathy (Randy) Peterson, Bettendorf, IA; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
