Note:
From "Early Days of Marion County" by Marian Burnes
"Elijah Pasco told me that when he was a little boy, he liked to go see Mrs. Lucinda Summers, Mrs. Harve Doshier's grandmother, and listen to her tell of the dark days during and right after the Civil War.
One story was about the murder of three men in the Mill Creek country by Bushwhackers. One of the men was slain on the farm near his mill on the creek, along with another man. She and some other women took an Ox wagon to move the two men to the Sims Place so they could sit up with them that night and bury them the next day. Two things she said she would never forget. One was trying to hold the men's bodies to keep them from sliding off the wagon and secondly, it was the first time she had ever heard a woman swear. One of the murdered men's wife cussed and swore.
This must have been in March, 1865. She was told one of the men was J. H. Reed (Reid) who is buried in the Vanzandt Cemetery. The other man was buried on the Sims Farm where he was killed.
A story circulated in the family that James H. Reid was working in his field or yard and a man rode up on horseback to talk to him. James Reid supposedly said " You wouldn't shoot a good man would you? Whereupon the Bushwacker drew his gun and shot James dead.
