I, William C. Fitzgerald Sr., and my journey through life came to an end on December 25, 2020. Knowing of my fate, before I passed, I wrote my own obituary. I know as I took my last breath ending my battle with numerous health issues that Donna, my wife of over 30 wonderful years, but most importantly my closest and most trusted friend for 37 plus years was by my side.
I was born on February 1, 1955 to the late Milton R. and June C. (Shaver) Fitzgerald. I graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1974.
For over 35 years, I was employed by various restaurants from the Capital District to the Adirondacks as a cook and/or manager.
In addition to my wife Donna (Rogers) Fitzgerald who I married June 15, 1990, I am survived by 3 children from my first marriage, 6 grandchildren, my sister, Patricia (Arthur Sr.) Schindler of Tiverton, RI. Further survived by my mother-in-law, Lorraine Rogers of East Greenbush, NY, and my sister-in laws Darlene Rogers of Albany, NY, Darcy Rogers of East Greenbush, NY and Deneane Rogers of East Greenbush, N.Y. In addition, I am survived by niece, Ashley Hayes of Pascagoula, MS, nephews Calvin Williams of Albany, NY and Jahlil Nails East Greenbush, NY. Also, survived by my best friend of thirty six plus years who was more like a brother, Jim (Kathy) Hennessy of Forest Hill., MD. I was predeceased by my brother and sister-in-law Robert and Maureen (Malone) Fitzgerald.
I along with Donna appreciated more than any words can express the thoughts, prayers, and the words of encouragement from our many friends and family. I wish I could put the names of all of you in this obit, but to do so would make me late for my own funeral. I would like though to say thank you to the people that made it possible for me to get through some of my worse days these past few years.
As my illnesses progressed, without a doubt Donna gave me my strength to fight on with each kiss, with each hug, and when her hand was firmly holding mine while reassuring me. I watched as Donna selflessly and compassionately helped my Hospice team make my passing away easier to accept.
Jim and Kathy Hennessy of Forest Hill, MD, thank you for your countless trips up to visit to help get me out when I could and be so understanding when I was unable. Thank you for the numerous texts and phone calls to check up on me and for a friendship which was more like family that spanned well over 36 years, and Jim most of all, thank you, I could not have ever picked a better best man then you. I cannot forget our wonderful caring neighbor’s, always there to help Donna and I, Joe and Judy Forte and Val and Roxane Fiacco, thank you so very much. Your friendships were immeasurable, and I sincerely thank you for all the little to big things you did for us. Thank you to everyone that showed up at what I dubbed “My Living Irish Wake” in August of 2019. Some of you I had not seen in anywhere from two to forty-five years. I was totally overwhelmed at the response.
Thank you to Donna’s colleagues of the Troy City School District, the support and your thoughtfulness conveyed to my wife and myself was so greatly appreciated. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, a few members of my Lansingburgh High School class of ’74 visited me at our home. Thank you Terry Simonds, Sharon Root and a special thank you to Carleen McLaughlin for arranging the visit and bringing along a special guest, Dora Patenaude, who I had not seen in well over 50 years when she lived over our family as I was growing up. It was so wonderful to relive our times of growing up in and going to the ‘Burgh.
Between my doctors and my excellent Hospice team, I had probably the best medical care anyone could have ever wished for. Thank you to my Pulmonologist, Dr. Joseph Seguel, and his incredible staff, especially Amanda and Jaimie, and to my primary doctor, Dr. Rommel Tolentino and members of his wonderful staff. Last but certainly not least, thank you to my Hospice team, my nurses Beth, Colleen, and Marianne plus my social workers Paula and Steve, thank you again, for the excellent care and support you had all given to Donna and myself.
One last note, Donna, I would sit on the edge of the bed as you rubbed my back, and I would pray silently to our heavenly Father to please look after you. I am sure he’s well aware but I wanted to make sure he knew as I would tell him, every night just what an amazing woman you are. A woman that I wish I did not have to leave.
Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.
