Ellen (Olson) Clark
December 26, 1942 - October 21, 2020

Sacramento, California - Ellen (Olson) Clark passed away suddenly after suffering poor health for many years. She grew up in Clarksburg and attended Clarksburg Elementary School and Clarksburg High School. She loved the outdoors and her horses. The memories of the trail rides and her drill team events remained some of the favorites of her childhood. Ellen was the editor of the high school paper. She also loved to arrange school dances, if she could convince a teacher to chaperone! She married and had two children, Sandy and Will, before divorcing.

She then attended UC Berkeley, getting her B.A. in history. She was awarded Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year, something she was very proud of the rest of her life. She continued at Berkeley, obtaining a Master's degree and the candidacy for her Ph.D. before deciding that there were not any teaching jobs available at the university level. It was not worth going into debt for another year to finish her degree. Ellen then ended up working at the Bank of America headquarters in San Francisco, leading the team that tested the very first automated tellers (ATM's). She finished her career as an analyst in risk management before getting Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which left her increasingly housebound for 28 years. This was a difficult transition for her, particularly as she was a very social person and just loved to talk, and discuss, and argue!

Just last summer, she was (finally) persuaded to live in a care home where she would have 24-hour assistance. Although she never admitted it to her daughter, she told the manager of the home that it was the best decision that daughter had ever made. She wished she had made the move years ago. Ellen was very happy with all the company after living alone. She got all the other residents addicted to her TV shows and they would come into her room to watch with her. Throughout her long illness, she never gave up hope that she would get better.

Ellen was predeceased by her parents, Gus and Mary Olson, and her brother, Dave Olson. She leaves behind two children Sandy (Clark) Burlando and Will Clark as well as two grandsons Michael Burlando and Chris Burlando.

Due to the Coronavirus situation, no services are planned at this time. The family is hopeful that an event can be scheduled by next summer.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Nature Conservancy or The Heifer Project in Ellen's name.
