James Clibborn was born at Anner House, Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland the 5th son of John Barclay Clibborn (1770-1850) and Elizabeth Grubb (1781-1861).

James Clibborn and his cousin John Grubb Richardson (1813-1890) founded a linen mill at Bessbrook in County Armagh.

James Clibborn m. Margaret G. Murray in 1850. They had seven (7) children:

(1) Alfred Ernest Clibborn
(2) Percy James Clibborn-1st marriage was to Blanche Young, a Salvation Army Officer and 2nd marriage was to Mabel Bernard of Chicago.
(3) Arthur Sydney Clibborn- Married Catherine "Kate" Booth, the daughter of William Booth who founded the Salvation Army in London in 1865.
(4) Edith Clibborn, b. 1856.
(5) Adelaide Clibborn, b. 1858, married Mr. Schreiner.
(6) Anne Murray Clibborn, b. 1861, d. 1931, m. George Dyer, an English Methodist minister and they settled in England.
(7) Margaret Helena Clibborn, b. 1864

James died at the age of 75 in Dublin where he was living with his unmarried daughter, Edith. Probate of James' will shows that at his death in December 1893 he was living in Woodville Sandford in the county of Dublin. He named his daughter Edith Clibborn and son Alfred Ernest Clibborn as executors of his will. James Clibborn's estate was valued at 9,951 British Pound Sterling which today would be worth almost 2 million dollars, $1,722,295.27.
