Mr. Obie Hamilton Brooks, age 82, of Lake City, Florida died Tuesday, Dec. 22, in the Shands at University of Florida Medical Center, Gainesville, Florida following an extended illness. Mr. Brooks was born in the Providence community of Union County and lived most of his life in Lake City, Florida.

He worked as a registered respiratory therapist (RRT) with the V.A. Medical Center, Lake City, Florida for over 44 years. After his retirement he was a volunteer for Shands Lake Shore Auxiliary. He was a charter member of Everybody’s Tabernacle, now Victory Assembly of God Church in Ellisville. He attended Providence Village Baptist Church and Hopeful Baptist Church and loved his garden by the highway, fishing with his grandchildren and his entire family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vollon C. and Selena Williams Brooks and four siblings, Ed Brooks, Jack Brooks, Bob Brooks and Ben Brooks. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myrna Brooks of Lake City, Florida: one son, Rodney (Michelle) Brooks of Atlanta, Georgia: two daughters, Rhonda Kay (Leroy) Sherrod of Lake City, Florida and Michelle (Shawn) Barnett of Jacksonville, Florida: one sister, Carol (Paul) Lewis of Lake Butler, Florida: six grandchildren, Tyler Sherrod, Rhett Barnett, Bradley Barnett, Raegan Brooks, Rylee Brooks and Ryann Brooks: numerous nieces and nephews also survive. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Brooks will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, Dec. 30, in the Hopeful Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Cunningham officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Lake City, Florida.
