Jim was born on June 5, 1934 on his family’s farm near Old Carrollton, IA, and was the son of Steven Raymond “Ray” and Mary Elizabeth (Cole) Lloyd. He grew up in Old Carrollton, where he attended country school as a boy and graduated from Glidden High School. Following high school, he worked with his uncle, Bill, as a plumber. Jim enlisted in the United States Army and served two years stationed in Germany.

He was married to Carolyn Lee on July 2, 1955 in Sequin, TX. Jim continued his military service and Carolyn lived with parents in Coon Rapids. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he returned to Iowa and the couple lived in Carroll where worked for H and H Foods. He later worked for Hoxie Foods and Continental Foods as a route salesman. He then worked at Pella Corporation for 20 years and then for Kirsch Custom Builders.

Jim was an avid woodworker and built many Adirondack chairs for friends and family. He could fix most anything and he loved to tinker. He enjoyed motorcycle racing in his younger years and watching Formula One car racing. Jim loved cats and took in many strays over the years. Jim and Carolyn spent many hours on their back deck enjoying nature and feeding birds and other furry friends.
