George graduated from Pierceville High School and attended Bible College in Cleveland, Ohio and Dallas, Texas. He spent his working career in Garden City as a self-employed carpenter and mason. After retiring he moved to Springfield, Missouri and returned to the area in 2016. He was a member of the Park Crest Baptist Church of Springfield, Missouri. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, camping and raising dogs.
He is survived by his Wife- Corrine Bates, 2 Daughters- Colleen (Wayne) Gaschler of Garden City and Norma (Monty) Spangler of Holcomb, Son- Kelly (Wendy) Bates of Longview, Texas, 2 Sisters- Elinor Paasch of Springdale, Arkansas, Nina Birkle of Garden City and Louise (Curt) Hokanson of Wichita, 2 Brother-In-Laws- Melvin Mott and Ray Brenning both of Garden City, Sister-In-Law Flo Bates of Knoxville, Tennessee, 8 Grandchildren- Andrew (Laurel) Frey, Hilary (Jeremy) Whiteley, McKenzie (Shad) Shapland, Tanner Spangler, Wes Spangler, Jackson Bates, Cameron Bates & Chloe Bates, 5 Great-Grandchildren- Carson Baker, Jaxson Shapland, Emma Shapland, Adilyn Shapland & Karson Whiteley. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Brother- Arvid Ray Bates and2 Sisters- Shirley Brenning and Myrna Mott.
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Revs John Durham and John Harms officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City.
