John Michael McGuire, 72, of Grapevine, Texas passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, Nebraska. Father Antony Thekkekara will be the Celebrant. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Charles E. Martin American Legion Post #186. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Family’s Choice. Condolences may be sent to Kerry McGuire at 1508 Ashwood Lane, Grapevine, TX 76051.

For the health and safety of others social distancing and face masks are required for those attending the visitation and funeral.

John Michael was born March 21, 1948, at Spalding, Nebraska to John Patrick and Anna Marie (O’Connell) McGuire. He was raised in Greeley and graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1966.

Mike entered the United States Army in 1968, serving for two years during Vietnam. He was a decorated combat veteran and received multiple awards for heroism as a part of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment-Blackhorse.

Following his discharge from the Army in 1970, he worked in Omaha at O’Keefe Elevator Company. In 1971, he returned to Greeley and farmed the McGuire Family Farm for over 10 years.

Mike and Maureen McQuillan were married at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley on September 25, 1971. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Sean, Kerry and Bridget. The family moved to Texas in 1983, where Mike resumed his work as an elevator mechanic. He was an elevator mechanic and inspector in Texas for the next 30 years, retiring in 2013. “Papa Mike” spent the next 7 years doing what he loved best, spending time with his grandkids and family; and traveling back home to Greeley.

Mike was a member of Charles E. Martin American Legion Post #186; VFW, Knights of Columbus and the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment Vietnam Cambodia Blackhorse. He enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and playing pool. Mike took many road trips with his best friend, Dan Callahan, and many trips back to Greeley to visit family and friends and attend the Greeley Irish Festival.

Survivors include two daughters, Kerry McGuire and Bridget McGuire Siharath (Moukda Siharath); three grandchildren, Shamus Ryan, Teagan Taylor and Leigh Taylor; a brother, Dan McGuire; a sister, Mary Ann McManus; and his former wife, Maureen McGuire.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Sean; and a nephew, Keith Michael Callahan.
