Joseph Allard Childers, Jr, 86, of Raleigh, NC passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020 at Rex Hospital alone due to the Corona virus outbreak and the strict standards imposed by the hospital. We were unable to be with him, but very much wanted to be with him.

Joe was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska February 2, 1934 to Joseph Allard Childers, Sr and Edith (Bird) Childers.

Joe's family included two brothers, Wilber Childers (deceased), Jerald Childers (deceased) and three sisters Henrietta Pauley (deceased), Connie Swanger (deceased), and Juanita Pritchett (of Vale, NC).

Joe spent his formative years in Nebraska and later Iowa where he completed his education and attended church. Being subject to the military draft, Joe was drafted in the United States military and served for four years in the Army completing his service with an Honorable discharge. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, NC. During his service he met Faye Lynn who soon became his wife. After moving back to the Midwest, he worked in a precious metal smelters plant for 9 years in Omaha Nebraska. He served his church, First Baptist, as head of the board of Deacons.

The move back to North Carolina to be closer to his wife Faye's family brought about new opportunities. Joe found his calling to become a teacher at the C. A. Dillon Youth Development Center where he truly made a difference in young people's lives teaching students small engine repair skills for 30 years. During his career at C. A. Dillon, he received the Governor’s Teaching Award of North Carolina. He was also the back-up for the principal position when needed.

Joe enjoyed playing golf, collecting over 300 golf clubs along the way and once hit a hole-in-one on the 18th green making the News and Observer. He also loved to fish and had several fishing trips with church friends that were followed by fish fries and fish stories. His kids and grandkids loved fishing with him. After retiring, he enjoyed keeping his grandchildren through the summer. He traveled to Mexico, Canada, Israel, Greece, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey and covered every state in the United States. One stop was a mission trip to Brazil to help build a church. He also helped with other mission trips in the United States.

Most recently Joe enjoyed playing with his great grandchildren, walking with friends in the mall, and attending church activities with his close friends.

He lived the past 52 years in Raleigh, NC. He was a long-standing member of Ephesus Baptist Church. Joe was a wonderful husband, fantastic father and admirable friend. He made your small accomplishments seem big and your big problems seem small. He had a way of making people feel good about themselves.

He is survived by his wife Faye Childers, sister Juanita Pritchett of Vale NC and daughters Nelda Johnson and Kim Bernard of Raleigh, NC; sons-in-law Marshall Johnson and Don Bernard; grandchildren Lindsay Davis, Cameron Johnson, Andrew Bernard, Joe Bernard; 8 great grandchildren and another great grandchild due July of this year.

A memorial service will be scheduled at Ephesus Baptist Church later once the coronavirus guideline for America have changed to allow for a larger gathering. Please sign the online guest book to leave the family condolences. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Ephesus Baptist Church, Raleigh NC.
