Doris was born July 6, 1927 in Ottumwa, IA. She was the fourth of five daughters. She married Preston Emerson Howell in 1947, who went on to have a distinguished military career, and retired as a Lt. Col. in the United States Marine Corps. Doris was a proud mother to her beloved daughters, Teresa and Betsy, and loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris and her family have called Pensacola home since 1970, where she was employed with Escambia County in numerous positions. Upon retiring in 1992, she was an active volunteer at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, taking on many leadership roles. She loved her New Life Sunday School class, of which she was a member of 40 years. She also volunteered tirelessly at Sacred Heart Hospital's Cancer Center. Her most special role was that of grandma to her treasured grandchildren, Natalie, Samuel and Peter. They were the greatest loves of her life.
Doris leaves behind a legacy of love for her family and friends and will be remembered for her unique ability to encourage and support with kindness, and her sassy sense of humor. She made each person feel important and special. The family will miss her more than words can express but is so fortunate and thankful to have been blessed to have Doris for such a long, wonderful life.
Doris will be reunited in heaven with husband, Lt. Col. Preston Howell, USMC (ret.), her daughter, Teresa Ann Howell McGarrity; her parents, Charles and Lora Overturf; brother, George; and sisters, Louise, Marge, Betty, and Janet.
Her memory will continue to live on through her daughter, Betsy Howell Brou (Paul); granddaughter, Natalie Elizabeth; grandsons, Samuel Lee and Peter Emerson; along with countless nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Due to COVID-19, there will be a private family graveside internment at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made in memoriam to one of the following organizations Doris supported, Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 5725 N. 9th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504 or to Manna Food Bank, Inc. of Pensacola, 3030 N. E. St., Pensacola, FL 32501.
The family also wants to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Gorton and her office staff, the Blake Assisted Living Facility and Covenant Hospice. A special thanks to Pastors Sheila Bates and Ashley Wilkinson-Meyer of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, and Nurse Patricia at the Blake Assisted Living facility.
