Ruth Neufeld Cooper Davis McGuire passed peacefully from this life to be with our LORD on December 22, 2020.

She was born to Jacob Henry Neufeld and Elizabeth Mehl Neufeld in Perryton, Texas on March 22, 1925. Jacob and Elizabeth, were of the Mennonite Brethren faith and homesteaded in Oklahoma in 1904.

Ruth’s brother, Clarence and sister Ruby, were 18 and 13 when Ruth was born. The family lived in Reedley, California several years due to business interests. Ruth was raised and attended public schools in Perryton, graduating in the 1942 high school class. She attended the SMU school of music (1942-1946) earning double major Bachelor degrees in Voice and Music Education and a Masters in Voice. While in Dallas she was a soloist at Highland Park Methodist Church, Temple Emanuel, and other prominent venues of religious service.

Ruth married James Morris Cooper, a Methodist minister, and graduate of SMU’s Perkins School of Theology in 1946. Together they served, he as pastor and she as choir director, with congregations in the Central Texas towns of Bruceville, Rosenthal, Mooreville, Lorena, and Waco’s Austin Avenue Methodist Church before organizing the Cogdell Memorial Methodist Church in Waco. Ruth and James had three children together. Reverend Cooper passed in 1966 while pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Euless, Texas. Ruth continued her service by teaching Jr. High choir students in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD during the following 5 years.

In 1971 Ruth married Grant Davis and moved to their ranch near Aubrey, Texas and then to Denton in 1981. They enjoyed their ever-expanding family over 31 years together, traveling, antiquing, gin rummy, scrabble, country-life and serving together in the First United Methodist Church in Denton. Grant passed in 2002.

In 2007 Ruth married David McGuire and enjoyed many activities at their new home in Good Samaritan Village, attended University of North Texas concerts where he had taught music for 23 years, and served together in the First United Methodist Church in Denton. David passed in 2015.

For the past 48 years, Ruth served in many capacities through the First United Methodist Church in Denton including Council of Ministries, Missions, Worship, Staff/Parish Relations, and President of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Ariel Music Department, Mu Phi Epsilon, was a Chi Omega, and a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow. It was often said of her that, when it came to service in her church and in her community, she was the first one in, and the last one out.

Designing, building, and managing Denton’s Greenhill Apartments near UNT which served many students through the years was her biggest business undertaking. She enjoyed painting in oils, scrabble with her friends, making dried flower cards, sunsets, the beauty of nature, and the best ever gift of her Yorkshire terrier, Rudy (short for Rudolf Alexander McDougal). Nurturing her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and all their relations was her greatest endeavor. Her volunteer work included, Friends of the Family, Denton Christian Preschool, Interfaith Ministries, Clothing Room in Denton, and the Denton State School, among countless others.

Surviving Ruth are: Sons and Daughters Paul and Trish Cooper of Austin, Phil and Stephanie Landers of Lake Kiowa, and John and Terry Cooper of Denton; Grandchildren Sarah Ruth Breiner, James Cooper, Chris Landers, Melissa and Ryan Kientzler, Jacob and Tiffany Cooper, and Becky and Buddy Thomason; Great and great-great grandchildren Sophia Cooper, Ava, Aidan, and Ahnna Ruth Breiner, Jade Landers, Austin, Kailey, and Andrew Kientzler, Trent Thomason, and Liberty and Wesley Cooper; Stepchildren Mike and Linda Davis of Sachse, TX, Bill Davis of Pagosa Springs, CO, Jeff Davis of Monterey, CA, Ann Davis-Garvin of Ann Arbor, MI, David, Jr. and Jane McGuire of Albuquerque, NM, Susan and Bill Cooksey of Denton, and Tim and Jody McGuire of Denton; Step-grandchildren Kym Sturdivant, Dawn Johnson, David Garvin, Sara Garvin, Jeff and Michelle Galloway, Robert, Jennifer, and Evan Davis, Will and Ariel Cooksey, Molly McGuire and husband Ramon Macazana-Rojas, Sally and Cori Geiger, Max and Kali McGuire, and Joy, Caitie, and Charlie McGuire; Step-great grandchildren Preslee, Coltyn, and Brady Galloway, Carter, Brandon, Hailey and Max Davis, and Liam Cooksey; Niece Betty Ann and Wendell Freeman of Perryton, TX; Nephews Don and Kaye Neufeld of Perryton, and Bob and Ann McCelvey of College Station; and Grand nieces and nephews Heather and Chad Barger and children Alice and Jack, Michael Neufeld, Chris and Chrystal Neufeld and son Christian, Jeff Freeman, Christi and Mike Bryan and daughters Kylie Bryan, and Katy Stanfield and Katy’s daughter Presley.

Whether Kin or Friend you can be assured she was grateful for the part you played in her life. In reference to the obituary, she said, “Just say I sang a lot of songs, and loved a lot of people.” She always felt blessed and shared her blessings freely with everyone she met. In the end, perhaps her most special and consequential gift was seeing the best in others. She was a beautiful person and we were all blessed and are grateful to have shared her life.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Ruth Davis to UMCOR–Global Ministries (United Methodist Committee on Relief) by contacting the First United Methodist Church in Denton or directly on their website at www.umcmission.org/umcor. Interment will be in Waco Memorial Park.
