HICKORY - John Roux Setzer, 91, of Hickory, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, after a brief stay in Sardis Oaks Rehab in Charlotte.

He was born May 10, 1916, in Newton to the late Annie Rhyne and John Milton Setzer.

He graduated from Hickory High School (Claremont Central High) in 1934. He briefly attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. He served in the Naval Air Force in the Pacific during World War II. Upon returning, he met and married Elizabeth (Lib) Hollan Smith. He worked for Elliot Building Co. before beginning Concrete Material & Supply, Hickory's first concrete plant. In the mid-1950s, he relocated his family and built houses on Islamorada in the Florida Keys before returning to the concrete business in Hickory. Mr. Setzer enjoyed family time, history, nature, gardening, cooking and travel, especially to the mountains and coast. He was a past president and member of Rotary for more than 50 years, enjoyed the Coffee Club and Romeos and volunteered at Catawba Valley Science Center. He was a longtime supporter of the Nature Conservancy and the North Carolina Zoo. Roux had a lifetime love of reading, learning and discussing politics, science and religion. His fiercely independent spirit will be missed by family and friends.

Mr. Setzer was preceded in death by his wife, Lib Setzer, and his sisters, Rix Abernethy of Hickory and Peggy Mowery of Saluda.

He is survived by his sister, Jeanne Taylor of Newton; a daughter, Anne Oliver and husband, Steve, of Williams Lake, B.C., Canada; a son, John Roux Setzer Jr. of Brooks, Ga.; a daughter, Mary Schmulling and husband, Hank, of Charlotte; daughter, Elizabeth (Liza) Setzer of Asheville; grandchildren, Tommy and Chris Wharton, Richard and Thomas Oliver and Harry, John and Joanna Schmulling; and many nieces and nephews.

The family appreciates the special care he received at Pinecrest Retirement Center in Hickory and Sardis Oaks in Charlotte. A visitation service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory, with a time for remembrances from family and friends at 5 p.m.
