Frederick J. Thomas

Crosslake - Fred was born June 26, 1950 in St. Cloud, MN to Richard D. & Esther (Burant) Thomas. He was the third of their five children. A local kid, he was a member of St. Augustine's parish since birth. He attended St. Aug's for elementary school, Cathedral for High School, and St. Cloud State for college. After college, he proudly served his country in the United States Army based in Seoul, South Korea. While on leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Judith M. Kub on April 6, 1974 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in St. Cloud. They lived in Alabama while Fred finished out his service, then returned to St. Cloud.

Above all, Fred loved his family. His wife Judy, daughter Allison (Adam) Cohn, son Andrew (Jennifer) Thomas, and his five grandsons (Benjamin, Elliott, and Joshua Cohn, Blake and Sam Thomas) were the center of his world and source of motivation for his many successes. Anyone he spoke to was forced to hear at least one pride-filled story about the Thomas family. They will miss him.

Fred also loved his work. He started working as a young boy and continued to do so through college, taking long shifts at the Wholesome Bakery with his friend Blair Witt. Following college, and his time in the service, he started his professional career at Holes Webway in Sales and Marketing. He joined May Printing (which later became Merrill Corporation) in 1978 where he helped grow the company over a 30+ year career, retiring as President of the Sales, Marketing and Real Estate division. Fred was a beloved leader who loved his team and colleagues like family.

Fred was a man with many interests and talents that he enjoyed with friends and family. He was always up for a fishing trip to Rainy Lake, a skiing trip to Colorado, a global adventure to France, Italy, Australia, Costa Rica, Myanmar, Vietnam and Germany. But his favorite place to entertain, which he loved to do, was at the cabin. A grill-master, he could often be found aside his Weber grill creating a feast for everyone around who was hungry. His hospitality and warmth were experienced and loved by many.

He is survived by his wife Judy of Crosslake, MN; daughter, Allison (Adam) Cohn of Plymouth; son, Andrew (Jennifer) Thomas of Plymouth; grandchildren, Benjamin, Elliott, and Joshua Cohn, Blake and Samuel Thomas; brother, Phillip (Lois) Thomas of St. Cloud; sister, Kristine (John) Cantlin of Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Sarah Tabaka and Sheila Chovan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 2, 2021 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 am - 11:00 am. All Covid precautions will be in effect and followed. Given the pandemic, the service will also be live-streamed; a link can be accessed via www.williamsdingmann.com. Any questions can be directed to Williams Dingmann.

At a later date, Fred will be laid to rest near his parents and extended family at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Minden Township (rural Benton County). Memorial gifts may be made to Cathedral High School or Second Harvest Heartland.
