FELTON- Terry C. Snyder passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at York Hospital with his wife Ruth M. Brinegar Snyder by his side. The couple had shared their life together for over 30 years. He died due to complications related to COVID virus.

Terry was born June 7, 1940 in Red Lion and was the son of late Titus C. and Pearl E (Burke) Snyder. He always had a sense of adventure and pursued many interests. After his school years, he enlisted in the Navy for a short stay. In the early 60s he became an operative agent for the Bollinger Detective Agency in York. He also was assigned a commission of Deputy Sheriff under the Sheriff of York County, Lyman Stambaugh. In 1961 he became the constable for the third ward in the city of York. He worked at Thonet Industries of York and then pursued a career in steel welding and manufacturing with Bowen McLaughlin Co at Bair Station, PA. He accomplished supervision status and over the years he worked at various companies in the welding and steel fabrication.

In 1978 Terry opened the first and only tourist attraction in York County. It was named Snyder’s Reptile Ranch. He gave lectures and exhibited all types of reptiles and venomous snakes as well as large cats such as lions, tigers, leopards and cougars. It had always been his childhood dream. He quickly gained the title of Snakeman. He enjoyed being involved with the Susquehannock Indian Dance Team which his brother Lee formed and founded. After the closing of the Snyder’s Reptile Ranch, he transformed the premises into an antique shop selling antique oak furniture and depression glassware. Terry and his father Titus attended many public sales and auctions together. Even as Terry maintained a full time work status, he always had some sideline business interests.

In the 1990’s Terry began collecting and restoring antique classic Chevrolet cars of the 1950’s. He and his wife Ruth enjoyed traveling to auto shows and swap meets. By 1998 he and Ruth owned ten classic Chevrolets completely restored. He began selling restored and unrestored classics and various vehicle parts covering a variety of years. With his knowledge of cars, he soon became known to everyone as the Chevy man.

In addition to working and pursuing business interests, Terry has had many poems published by the American Poetry Association and World of Poetry Press. He copyrighted five songs with musical score registered in the Library of Congress. In 1987 he wrote and published a book called Spiritually Prophecy. He wrote under the name Domitros’ Hartire. In 1997 he completed two genealogy issues, one on the Snyder History of his family that covers both the Snyder and Snell lineages. The other book on just the Snyder line covering the years 1754 to present day. He was considered the Snyder family historian. He thoroughly loved to talk with family to research our family lineage, walking the cemeteries looking for lost loved ones to document our Snyder genealogy. Many times at the Snyder family reunions he would share his genealogy findings. He has donated copies of his books to the York Historical Society. Terry helped his wife, Ruth, with her Brinegar/Ayres genealogy and assisted her in creating books for her family lineage from 1625 to present day.

Terry and wife Ruth have been enthusiastic karaoke entertainers. In 1999 they formed a group called Heaven & Earth, a ministry through song. Their shows were focused towards nursing home in their local areas. Each month they would visit a facility and share their music and ministry. Terry also had a very special friendship bond with Bruce W. Kinard and wife Wendie. He really enjoyed spending time with them, discussing life, talking about Scripture, singing and traveling. He always called them his family.

For over 30 years Terry enjoyed the Brinegar family parties, especially at Christmas time. He looked forwarded to making his fruit salad or some other dish and at times he would provide music entertainment. He had a close friendship with each family; he cared about all of them and knew how much they loved him back.

Terry is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Brinegar Snyder, grandsons Jacob Samuel and Joseph Terry Snyder, sisters Judith Ann Barnhardt (husband John “Jack”), Pearl Susan Sawmiller, Deborah Ann (Leuw-Robinson) O’Donnell (husband Rick in Florida); Bambie Lynn Snyder and many cousins and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Titus Clyde and Pearl Elizabeth (Burke) Snyder; brother Lee Russell Snyder, son Monty Lars Snyder and brother-in-law, Ralph T. Lambert.

A private graveside service will be held at Red Lion Cemetery. Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory Inc. 35 Gotham Place in Red Lion is in charge of arrangements.
